Meeting Jesus Again For The First Time. The Historical Jesus & the Heart of Christian Faith.

Marcus Borg
HarperSanFrancisco, 1994.
Accepting that much of the New Testament reflects what the Church later came to believe about Jesus, Marcus Borg explores what the historical Jesus was actually like and what his message was. Borg draws on recent scholarship but writes in a very accessible way. A powerful book for those willing to look at Jesus a little deeper, and perhaps encounter him again, for the first time.
 PUC-PL-the heart-of-christianity

The Heart of Christianity. Rediscovering a Life of Faith.

Marcus Borg
HarperSanFrancisco, 2003.
A book that looks at what authentic Christian faith might look like today by contrasting this emerging vision with an earlier vision that many no longer find sustaining.“There is a way of seeing Christianity that makes persuasive and compelling sense of life in the broadest sense… The sacrifice that Christianity ask of us is not ultimately a sacrifice of the intellect.” – From the Preface xi

Reading the Bible Again for the First Time. Taking the Bible Seriously but Not Literally.

Marcus Borg
HarperSanFrancisco, 2001.
Marcus Borg contrasts 2 ways to read the Bible that feed into 2 styles of Christian faith. He rejects a “literal-factual” way that tends towards fundamentalism and instead offers what he calls a “historical-metaphorical” way that takes the Bible seriously but not literally. A great contribution to the debate about how to interpret the Bible today.

What’s So Amazing About Grace?

Philip Yancey
Strand Classics, 2000.
Respected author Philip Yancy explores one of Christianity’s fundamental, but all too-often misunderstood, touchstones – grace – the unconditional acceptance of God that leads to an unconditional acceptance of others. Filled with many stories, this is an enjoyable, easy to read book.
